Stop Practicing the Same Mistake Over and Over

The AP Lang MCQ Error Lab & 50/50 Workbook is built for the moment after a student says, “I narrowed it to two and still picked the wrong one.” Instead of adding another pile of questions, it teaches students to diagnose the reasoning pattern behind the miss, create a prevention rule, and prove on fresh material that the error is becoming rarer.

A wrong answer has more information in it than the letter you should have chosen

Suppose two students both miss Question 14. Student A chose an answer that was too broad. Student B understood the passage but lost the final 50/50 decision. Giving both students the same explanation hides the most useful information: they need different corrections.

This workbook treats every miss as data. Students classify whether the failure came from scope, unsupported inference, relationship, stem/task mismatch, 50/50 decision-making, or time pressure. Then they write a prevention rule and retest it. The goal is not simply a higher practice percentage. The goal is a lower repeat-error rate.

What is actually inside the PDF

78original MCQ practice questions
14original Reading + Writing sets
8 weeksof repeat-error tracking
5reusable 50/50 decision labs

Diagnostic System

Six error families plus TRAP-5: Contradicted, Unsupported, Scope Mismatch, Right Facts/Wrong Relationship, and Right Passage/Wrong Question.

Original Practice

Eight nonfiction Reading passages with 48 questions and six Writing/revision sets with 30 questions. No recycled released-exam text.

Explanations That Diagnose

Answer explanations focus on the job of the question and the evidence burden rather than merely identifying the correct letter.

50/50 Decision Sheets

Students compare what Choice A and Choice B would each require the passage to prove, then locate the wording fracture.

8-Week Dashboard

Track accuracy alongside scope, inference, relationship, stem, 50/50, timing, and repeat-error rate.

Teacher / Tutor Tools

Conference sheets turn a total score into a repeat pattern, one prevention rule, and one measurable retest assignment.

The metric most practice packets never ask students to calculate

Repeat-error rate asks a more useful question than “Did my score go up?” It measures how often an error category returns after the student has already identified it and practiced a correction.

Repeat-error rate = repeated errors from a previously identified category ÷ total errors in the new set

A student can improve before the overall score visibly jumps. If scope errors fall from five to one while a difficult new passage introduces different mistakes, the total percentage may hide real progress. The workbook makes that progress visible and tells the student what still needs work.

CheckQuestion to askWhat it catches
ContradictedDoes the passage give me evidence against this choice?Answers that sound polished but conflict with the text.
UnsupportedWhat exact evidence earns this claim?Plausible answers that require an invented premise.
Scope MismatchIs this answer about the right amount of text and degree?Paragraph-level answers used for sentence-level questions; extreme qualifiers.
Right Facts, Wrong RelationshipAre the details correct but the verb connecting them wrong?Example vs. cause, concession vs. rebuttal, contrast vs. qualification.
Right Passage, Wrong QuestionDoes this answer the stem's exact job?True statements that answer a different question.

Who gets the most value from this workbook?

The “I always get it down to two” student

Use the 50/50 labs to stop making the final choice by feel. Each sheet forces both surviving choices to carry an explicit burden of proof.

The plateaued student

If scores are staying similar, the 8-week tracker can reveal whether one error family is repeating even when the question topics change.

The teacher or tutor

Use the conference protocol to group students by bottleneck rather than by total score and assign a small measurable retest.

Students who need the free strategy foundation first should begin with AP Lang Multiple-Choice Strategies. If your overall AP English performance has plateaued and you are not sure MCQ is the primary bottleneck, run the free AP English Score Plateau Diagnostic first.

How one missed question becomes a better future decision

1. Diagnose

Name the error family before reading the explanation.

2. Isolate

Practice the specific decision without hiding it inside a full test.

3. Retest

Use fresh material and measure whether the same error repeats.

4. Transfer

Return the skill to mixed, timed practice and see whether it survives.
